The American Society for Cell Biology’s (ASCB) clever annual meeting marketing campaign on model organisms has netted an American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) Gold Circle Award. The honor will be formally bestowed during the ASAE’s Marketing, Membership, and Communications Conference in Washington, DC, in June. The official press release can be found here.

Framed as a personality quiz, the marketing campaign asked participants to answer some simple questions online to determine which commonly used biology model organism they were. Respondents could be any one of 9 organisms, such as C. elegans or mouse. Results could be shared on social media, and the quiz was an instant hit.

At the 2018 ASCB|EMBO Meeting in San Diego, free stickers featuring all possible model organisms were handed out. A beautiful t-shirt featuring several organisms represented as constellations was sold. The shirt and sticker artwork was designed by Beata Edyta Mierzwa, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California, San Diego, and the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research, and owner of Beata Science Art.  ASCB Marketing and Design Manager Leeann Kirchner created and executed the entire campaign.

Anyone can still take the model organism quiz here. Which model organism are you?

In June of 2018, ASCB rolled out a new bi-monthly, magazine-style ASCB Newsletter. The new look was honored in March 2019 with a Silver Award from Association Trends, a Maryland-based organization for trade associations. The newsletter redesign was accomplished with input from the entire communications department, with Kirchner spearheading the visual redesign and W. Mark Leader, editor of the Newsletter, leading the content overhaul.

“It took a creative vision and an eye for detail to conceptualize and create these marketing and communications tools, and the communications team did an outstanding job,” said ASCB CEO Erika Shugart.
