Education Committee Mission and Goals

Vision: Students and cell biology professionals will engage in educational activities that promote the entry of future scientists into the many disciplines available to them for careers. Cell biology education will produce a scientifically literate citizenry able to participate in policy discussions and decisions for the United States and internationally re: science. The science education of the nation’s youth is a critical responsibility accepted by the ASCB membership.

Goals: The ASCB Education Committee (EdComm) will:

1) promote biology education, science literacy, and career development in biology-related fields focused on K-12 students, undergraduate students, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and junior faculty, and science professionals;

2) engage ASCB members in these activities at both ASCB meetings and home institutions;

3) collaborate with the Women in Cell Biology (WICB) Committee and Minorities Affairs Committee to support equity and access to education and these career opportunities;

4) promote EdComm member participation in one educational activity beyond their job requirements each year (a substantive classroom visit, an educational session at a professional meeting, a “town hall meeting” in their congressional district about science education, etc.;

5) encourage all ASCB members to support these goals.


EdComm will achieve its goals by: 1) providing education policy advice through the Public Policy Committee (PPC); 2) informing its target audience about ASCB educational activities through the Public Information Committee (PIC); 3) engaging in a variety of activities at the Annual Meeting across the range of educational levels and issues; 4) interacting with sister professional societies [including the National Association of Biology Teachers (NABT) and the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA)] to maximize and leverage resources; 5) encouraging ASCB members to publish their educational activities in CBE—Life Sciences Education ;6) maintaining and updating the ASCB BioEducate website; and 7) providing information resources for federal agencies and foundations studying pedagogy, curriculum, and assessment strategies.
