LGBTQ+ Ally Session

The LGBTQ+ Ally Session is the complement to the LGBTQ+ Diversity session at the 2020 meeting. It is designed to expand the support network for underrepresented groups by engaging, encouraging, and educating allies for LGBTQ+ scientists as part of a broader goal of increasing diversity and improving opportunities for LGBTQ+ scientists. As demonstrated by the interest in meeting attendees placing rainbow “ally” stickers on their badge in previous conferences, we anticipate great interest in an ally session.

Learning Objectives:
1. Attendees will learn about the challenges experienced by LGBTQ+ scientists.
2. Attendees will receive training that will help them to be more inclusive and considerate of these challenges.
3. Attendees will become empowered as allies to better support their colleagues and foster a diverse, representative scientific workforce.

Target Audience: All ASCB members (regular, students, postdocs, educators, policymakers) that wish to create a more inclusive, supportive environment for LGBTQ+ scientists.

Sponsored By: LGBTQ+ Committee

Speakers:
Erik Welf, Chair, UT Southwestern
Bruno Azevedo, Chair, UT Southwestern
Malik Muhammad, Associate Director of the LGBT Center, University of Pennsylvania, University of Pennsylvania
