The COMPASS career development subcommittee is a new team dedicated to expanding career development and training through ASCB. We have been assembling several initiatives, ranging from events for the Annual Meeting to year-round resources. We are excited about what we have in store and we are looking forward to making a splash in New Orleans this December!
Our first project is a series of Career Perspectives, in which we bring together the collective wisdom of today’s biomedical workforce to provide first-hand insight into the vast array of career options open to cell biology trainees. We reached out to recently-hired friends and colleagues in a variety of positions, including academic faculty and staff, industry scientists, science communication experts and business administrators. We asked them to share their personal career pathways and to give advice on how to successfully follow in their footsteps. We will be publishing more than thirty career perspectives on the ASCB website in the near future, so stay tuned for some interesting and enlightening stories!

We are also working on a full schedule of programs for this year’s Annual Meeting. Through the revamped Career Center, we will be expanding the One-on-one CV Review drop-in program and introducing new opportunities to network with potential employers through Biotech Q&A Sessions. Additionally, we will be providing input on continuing Annual Meeting programs to help hone your interviewing style, to hear insights from a panel of career experts, and to get advice at the newly expanded career roundtables.
The career development subcommittee is dedicated to designing programs for current and potential ASCB members at every stage of their professional development. To provide the services and events that you want most, we need your input. We are currently putting together Graduate Student and Postdoc Surveys to help us identify your concerns and get feedback on our programming. We would also love to hear your ideas for other new activities that you would like to get started at ASCB. Please e-mail us your thoughts or write your comments below.

Kellyann Jones-Jamtgaard is a graduate student at the University of Kansas Medical Center in the department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics. Her research focuses on how Hepatitis C Virus modulates host cell trafficking. Kellyann serves as the COMPASS liaison to ASCB's Public Policy Committee.
