It may be possible to bill ASCB membership dues to direct or indirect costs under a National Institutes of Health (NIH) grant.
NIH guidelines state that subscriptions are allowable as direct costs and memberships as indirect costs (see section 200.454 of the U.S. Federal Government Uniform Guidelines). Your ASCB membership includes an annual subscription to Molecular Biology of the Cell valued at $626 per year.
Some universities allow membership fees as a direct cost to a project if it reduces the overall cost of attending a conference by more than the fee. The difference in price between a nonmember and member ASCB Annual Meeting registration far exceeds the cost of an ASCB membership. Savings range from $50 for undergraduate students, $130 for graduate students, $210 for postdocs, and $230 for regular members.
