Resilience, Science, and Our Unwavering Mission
Resilience, Science, and Our Unwavering Mission

Dear Members,
As I reflect on the journey of the ASCB, I am struck by the resilience that defines both our organization and the scientific community at large. In the face of shifting societal landscapes, economic challenges, and persistent misinformation, we have remained steadfast in our mission: to advance scientific discovery, promote education, and foster a community that supports cell biologists worldwide.
Resilience is woven into the very fabric of science itself. Scientific progress is rarely linear. Each breakthrough is built on the hard work, unexpected outcomes, and countless refinements that follow rigorous inquiry. As cell biologists, we know this well. The complex and beautiful processes we study inside cells mirror our own experience—trial, error, adaptation, and ultimately, discovery.
Our organization has faced considerable challenges in recent years. The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted research, strained our community, and tested our ability to connect. But ASCB rose to meet these obstacles. We adapted, implementing virtual conferences that kept our community engaged and informed. We strengthened mentorship programs to support early-career scientists facing unprecedented hurdles. We stood firm in advocating for sustained research funding and policies that protect scientific integrity. Through these efforts, our members remained connected, inspired, and empowered.
This resilience stems from a shared belief in the importance of science itself. Science is more than a body of knowledge; it is a method of seeking truth and understanding. It thrives on transparency and open inquiry—values that are fundamental to trust in scientific outcomes. As public skepticism about science grows in some sectors, it is incumbent upon us as scientists to communicate our work clearly and responsibly. The public must not only understand what we know, but also how we know it. Trust is built when we demonstrate the rigor of our methods, the humility to revise conclusions when new evidence emerges, and the commitment to serve society through discovery.
In this climate, the ASCB’s mission is more important than ever. We must continue to champion scientific excellence and ensure that discoveries in cell biology improve lives. We are advocating vigorously for research funding that sustains the vital work of our members. And we are dedicated to ensuring that inclusion and access remain core to our programs, enriching the science we pursue and the community we build.
Our mission endures because of you—our dedicated members. Your resilience in the lab, your engagement in education and advocacy, and your unwavering commitment to discovery inspire us. ASCB is strong because you are strong. Together, we will continue to advance science in ways that benefit society and future generations.
Thank you for your dedication, perseverance, and belief in the power of science. With your partnership, I am confident that our community will not only withstand the challenges ahead but will emerge stronger, wiser, and more impactful than ever before.
With gratitude,
Rebecca Alvania, Ph.D.
CEO, American Society for Cell Biology
