Job Announcement: Science Policy Fellow – Bethesda, MD

The American Society for Cell Biology (ASCB) is a network of more than 9,000 cell biologists in more than 65 countries. With Nobel laureates and highly distinguished scientists among its members and serving on its board of directors, this prestigious organization is composed of scientists spanning all areas of cell biology dedicated to advancing scientific discovery, advocating sound research policies, improving education, promoting professional development, and increasing diversity in the scientific workforce.

Located in Bethesda, MD, this newly created position reports to the acting Director of Public Policy and will be a liaison for the Public Policy Committee. This includes representing the Society on Capitol Hill and with government agencies. This is not a telecommuting position.

This is an entry-level policy position, ending on December 31, 2016.

Public Policy Committee (PPC):

  • Organize and take notes for the monthly public policy calls
  • Organize and prepare minutes for the two PPC meetings
  • Provide input on PPC activities
  • Interact in a professional capacity with members on the Committee
  • Organize and market the PPC events that will be held at the ASCB Annual Meeting

Web Page:

  • Work with IT Department to keep the PPC and Advocacy pages on the ASCB website up-to-date

Capitol Hill:

  • Attend meetings and hearings on Capitol Hill
  • Follow and report on recent legislative actions that affect biomedical research

Relationship Management:

  • Work with our partners in the advocacy community, especially the Coalition for the Life Sciences
  • Work closely with Meetings Department to ensure PPC activities are smoothly coordinated with the meeting program and other meeting activities before, during, and after the Annual Meeting


  • Write articles for the ASCB Post and the ASCB Advocacy page
  • Draft talking points and background on issues of importance to ASCB members


  • Must have a PhD and be an ASCB member in good standing with a strong interest in science policy and advocacy.
    Postdocs are strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Some experience with Capitol Hill is preferred.

Candidates should possess these traits:

  • Experience writing for a nonscientific audience
  • Excellent oral and interpersonal communications skills
  • Ability to interact with high-ranking elected officials and high-ranking scientists, including Nobel laureates
  • Be a “doer” with a keen sense of urgency, excellent follow-up, and extreme attention to detail
  • Ability to take the initiative with very little supervision
  • Ability to work well under pressure and on tight deadlines, maintaining professional relationships with colleagues at all times. You are willing to roll-up-your sleeves and be a team player.
  • A positive attitude, motivation, inquisitiveness, and an engaging level of enthusiasm
  • A demonstrated interest in the mission of the ASCB and the ability to communicate the value proposition of ASCB to our members
