ASCB Statement Regarding U.S. Supreme Court Rulings on University Admissions Policies

The leadership of the American Society for Cell Biology regrets the decisions by the United States Supreme Court, released on June 29, 2023, prohibiting universities from including the race of an applicant as part of their admissions policies.

Science realizes a great deal from the richness of thought and experience that diversity offers. Not only does our science benefit from diverse colleagues but we are also better as individuals. We regret that these joint decisions by the Supreme Court may diminish the diversity of the learning experience for all students at higher education institutions around the United States.

Despite the rulings by the Supreme Court, the ASCB remains committed to fostering diversity in the cell biology community. While students from diverse communities will certainly be hurt from these rulings in the short term, we will all be affected in the long term.
