ASCB statement on the reappointment of Francis Collins as NIH director

The American Society for Cell Biology (ASCB) is pleased with the announcement by the White House that Francis Collins has been permanently reappointed as Director of the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Since being selected by President Obama in 2009 to lead the NIH, Dr. Collins has offered stable leadership to the American scientific community. Dr. Collins has also served as a superb advocate on behalf of NIH-funded research, walking the halls of Congress and meeting with as many members as possible to build bipartisan support for the NIH.

Dr. Collin’s time on the Hill has paid off greatly. In tight budget times, Congress wisely increased the NIH budget by $2 billion for the last two years and the Hill was quick to dismiss the massive cuts to the NIH proposed by the Trump Administration in both FY17 and FY18.
