2022 and 2023 Program Commitee Call for Volunteers

Deadline for application: Friday, February 12, 2021

The ASCB and EMBO are committed to creating diverse and inclusive Cell Bio Meetings. We are opening a Call for Volunteers for the Cell Bio Meeting Program Committee to regular ASCB members and EMBO members. Membership must remain current for the two year term. This call is for service on the Program Committee for the 2022 and 2023 Cell Bio Meetings, and for a Program Committee Chair for the 2022 meeting.

Each of the seven scientific tracks has two track chairs, for a total of 14 Program Committee members. One track chair is serving their second year and we are accepting applications for seven track chairs to replace the members who are rotating off of the committee.

Service on the committee requires responsiveness via email, working with a Google Drive document, reviewing applications for Minisymposia co-chairs, as well as participation on one or two two-hour conference calls. The committee is responsible for assisting with:

  • Crafting the list of Symposia topics and speakers, and workshop topics and speakers. To do this, we will have one to two conference calls in late summer/early fall of the year prior to the meeting year, and use a Google document to supplement these calls.
  • Selecting Minisymposia co-chairs within your scientific track. There will be an application process for minisymposia co-chairs. The application deadline will be around April 15 of 2022 and 2023, and you will have approximately one month to work with your fellow track chair to select a specified number of minisymposia co-chairs who will review and score the abstracts in August of 2022 and 2023.
  • In addition to the responsibilities above, the 2022 ASCB-Selected Program Committee Chair will work with the EMBO-elected chair and 2022 ASCB President to:
    • Finalize selections for the Program before presentation to Council.
    • Review Special Interest Subgroup applications in May 2022 and schedule them to minimize topic conflict.
    • Schedule the Minisymposia sessions in late August/early September 2022 to minimize conflicts and ensure appropriate room sizes based on topic popularity.
    • Select a Porter Lecturer to be approved by the Porter Foundation.
    • The chair will not review the applications for minisymposia co-chairs but will oversee the process, provide guidance, and ensure the members of the Program Committee ensuring diversity in their selections.

The draft program of Symposia and workshop topics and speakers will be presented by the 2022 and 2023 ASCB President at the December ASCB Council meetings the year prior to the meeting year for approval.
