[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]Nine ASCB members—eight national and one foreign associate—have been elected to the National Academy of Sciences. In addition, the academy voted special honors to two other ASCB members, the NAS Award for Scientific Reviewing to Tom Pollard of Yale University and the NAS Award for Scientific Discovery to Jonathan Weissman, University of California, San Francisco (UCSF).

In alphabetical order, those elected to NAS this year are:

  • Sue Biggins, Division of Basic Sciences, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Seattle, WA
  • Marianne Bronner, Albert Billings Ruddock Professor of Biology and Biological Engineering, California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, CA
  • Catherine Dulac, Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology and Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA
  • Alfred L. Goldberg, Professor of Cell Biology, Department of Cell Biology, Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA
  • Christine Jacobs-Wagner, Professor of Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology, Director of the Microbial Sciences Institute, and Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator, Yale University New Haven, CT
  • Randall T. Moon, William and Marilyn Conner Chair, Director, Department of Pharmacology, Institute for Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine, and Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator; University of Washington, Seattle, WA
  • Eva Nogales, Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory
  • Danny Reinberg, Professor, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Pharmacology and Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator, New York University School of Medicine, New York, NY

Foreign Associate:

  • Satyajit Mayor, Director, National Centre for Biological Sciences, Bangalore, India

The NAS prize in scientific reviewing went to Pollard, the Sterling Professor of Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology at Yale, for his work in “synthesizing extensive and difficult material” in scholarly reviews of cell motility, tracing the subject’s history to its beginnings, analyzing the biochemistry responsible for cell movement, and building “creative models that have guided the development of the field.” The award comes with a $20,000 prize.

Weissman, who is a professor in the Department of Cellular and Molecular Pharmacology and Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator at UCSF, won the NAS discovery award for his development of ribosome profiling, a new technique for genome-wide analysis of protein synthesis in living cells at high resolution. According to the citation, Weissman’s ribosome profiling method led directly to “many unanticipated, critical molecular insights concerning the process whereby RNA sequences are translated into protein sequences.” The discovery prize includes a gold medal, $50,000 for Weissman, and $50,000 for further support of his research.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_empty_space height=”32px”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/4″][bsf-info-box icon_type=”custom” icon_img=”30929″ img_width=”202″ icon_size=”32″ icon_color=”#333333″ icon_style=”none” icon_color_bg=”#ffffff” icon_color_border=”#333333″ icon_border_size=”1″ icon_border_radius=”500″ icon_border_spacing=”50″ icon_animation=”fadeIn” title=”Sue Biggins” read_more=”none” read_text=”Read More” hover_effect=”style_1″ pos=”top” title_font_style=”font-weight:bold;” title_font_size=”17″ title_font_line_height=”18″ desc_font_size=”14″ desc_font_line_height=”16″][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/4″][bsf-info-box icon_type=”custom” icon_img=”30932″ img_width=”202″ icon_size=”32″ icon_color=”#333333″ icon_style=”none” icon_color_bg=”#ffffff” icon_color_border=”#333333″ icon_border_size=”1″ icon_border_radius=”500″ icon_border_spacing=”50″ icon_animation=”fadeIn” title=”Marianne Bronner” read_more=”none” read_text=”Read More” hover_effect=”style_1″ pos=”top” title_font_style=”font-weight:bold;” title_font_size=”17″ title_font_line_height=”18″ desc_font_size=”14″ desc_font_line_height=”16″]Credit: Lance Hayashida/Caltech[/bsf-info-box][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/4″][bsf-info-box icon_type=”custom” icon_img=”30928″ img_width=”202″ icon_size=”32″ icon_color=”#333333″ icon_style=”none” icon_color_bg=”#ffffff” icon_color_border=”#333333″ icon_border_size=”1″ icon_border_radius=”500″ icon_border_spacing=”50″ icon_animation=”fadeIn” title=”Catherine Dulac” read_more=”none” read_text=”Read More” hover_effect=”style_1″ pos=”top” title_font_style=”font-weight:bold;” title_font_size=”17″ title_font_line_height=”18″ desc_font_size=”14″ desc_font_line_height=”16″]Photo by Rick Friedman Photography[/bsf-info-box][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/4″][bsf-info-box icon_type=”custom” icon_img=”30927″ img_width=”202″ icon_size=”32″ icon_color=”#333333″ icon_style=”none” icon_color_bg=”#ffffff” icon_color_border=”#333333″ icon_border_size=”1″ icon_border_radius=”500″ icon_border_spacing=”50″ icon_animation=”fadeIn” title=”Alfred Goldberg” read_more=”none” read_text=”Read More” hover_effect=”style_1″ pos=”top” title_font_style=”font-weight:bold;” title_font_size=”17″ title_font_line_height=”18″ desc_font_size=”14″ desc_font_line_height=”16″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_empty_space height=”32px”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/4″][bsf-info-box icon_type=”custom” icon_img=”30926″ img_width=”202″ icon_size=”32″ icon_color=”#333333″ icon_style=”none” icon_color_bg=”#ffffff” icon_color_border=”#333333″ icon_border_size=”1″ icon_border_radius=”500″ icon_border_spacing=”50″ icon_animation=”fadeIn” title=”Christine Jacobs-Wagner” read_more=”none” read_text=”Read More” hover_effect=”style_1″ pos=”top” title_font_style=”font-weight:bold;” title_font_size=”17″ title_font_line_height=”18″ desc_font_size=”14″ desc_font_line_height=”16″]
