As a working scientist, you know firsthand about the incredible pace of discovery and about the serious issues facing research science today. That’s why your ASCB membership is so important. The ASCB is committed to helping you advance your science and your career.

ASCB Addresses Key Scientific Policy Issues

ASCB works on hot button science policy issues, such as reproducibility and the workforce pipeline. ASCB has initiated task forces to address critical science policy issues, including on the future of stem cell research and issues of reproducibility.

ASCB Advocates for Increased Science Funding

ASCB advocates constantly for funding for basic science and for sound science policies. Each year, we ask for report language directing NIH to continue its focus on basic biomedical research. We get things done in policy and we are recognized by leaders in Washington as an effective and respectable force of advocacy.

ASCB Champions Issues That Affect Our Members
  • ASCB changed the law that restricted federal scientists, like the program directors who manage your grants at NIH, to travel to scientific meetings and visit grantees.
  • We’ve also helped change policies on immigration and postdoc searches. In 2013, ASCB issued a whitepaper outlining critical changes that need to be made to U.S. immigration law to enable the United States to remain the leader in scientific research.
  • We provide scientists with helpful hints for contacting your congressional representatives.

ASCB Fosters Dialog Between Scientists and Congress

ASCB ensures Congress and the world hear the latest on science policy issues. We are a founding partner of the Congressional Biomedical Research Caucus, which brings cutting-edge science briefings to Congress. We regularly take ASCB scientists to Capitol Hill to update Congress about critical science.

ASCB Is Improving How Research Is Assessed

ASCB was the inspirational leader for the coalition that spearheaded the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA), which has already changed the discourse worldwide on the misuse of journal impact factors. We are in it for the long haul on this one, but the change all started at ASCB and with ASCB leadership.
