NYUAD’s vision is to be counted among the world’s great research universities. It is a center of innovative education and of distinctive scholarship, research, and artistic activity.

Actively connected to NYU New York and its global sites, NYUAD embodies a new paradigm in higher education for a global world. Fully integrated in Abu Dhabi society, it has helped to establish the city of Abu Dhabi as a leading international hub of talent, ideas, and innovation.

Candidates for the Global  PhD Student Fellowship in the Sciences  – Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, or Physics – submit a standard PhD admissions application to the NYU Graduate School  of Arts  and Science (GSAS).

Candidates for the Fellowship in Engineering submit a standard PhD admissions  application to the NYU Tandon School of Engineering.

There is no separate application for the Fellowship; any applicant expressing interest in undertaking the research phase of the PhD with  NYUAD  faculty will  be considered.

Application deadlines are set by each GSAS or School of Engineering department, and are usually in December for admission to the following academic year’s cohort. Applications will be reviewed by joint committees of faculty from  NYU Abu Dhabi and NYU New York, with offers  of admission extended by the relevant NYU New York school.

  • Graduate Record Examination (GRE) general test (and subject tests where applicable)
  • TOEFL or university degree from an

English language institution

  • Letters of recommendation
  • Statements of purpose
  • University transcripts

These are examples of basic  application requirements. Some may differ by program; please see the GSAS and School  of Engineering admissions websites for further information.

New York

Global PhD Students complete their course requirements in New York, generally during the fall and spring semesters of their first year.

In consultation with their advisor and department, students will outline a program of core courses and electives that fits their individual research needs.

Working in New York gives students the opportunity to connect with leading researchers in their field and provides the foundation for successful careers in academe, industry, and government.

Abu Dhabi

Students first visit Abu Dhabi in the summer before starting courses in New York. New Graduate Student Orientation introduces students to NYUAD, Abu Dhabi, and the UAE, and is followed by a month-long summer visit allowing students to connect with faculty and develop their research interests.

In January of their first year, students visit AAbu Dhabi again to continue laying the foundation of their research.

Once all the coursework and qualifying exams are completed, students pursue fulltime research under their advisors’ supervision in NYUAD’s brand-new, custom-built facilities.

NYUAD  has contributed to my goals  and accomplishments by providing the ideal environment for my research. The vast amount of resources available to PhD candidates has no match compared to anywhere else, and University faculty have strong ties to major industry players both in UAE and the US.

  • Nektarios Tsoutsos, Global PhD in Engineering

The international experience I have gained studying at NYUAD  has opened my eyes to a wealth of opportunities that exist  worldwide. In addition to working in a lab with state

of-the-art instrumentation, I have been able to work and visit conferences in other countries, which I consider a rare privilege in graduate school.
