Global PhD Students complete their course requirements in New York, generally during the fall and spring semesters of their first year.
In consultation with their advisor and department, students will outline a program of core courses and electives that fits their individual research needs.
Working in New York gives students the opportunity to connect with leading researchers in their field and provides the foundation for successful careers in academe, industry, and government.
Students first visit Abu Dhabi in the summer before starting courses in New York. New Graduate Student Orientation introduces students to NYUAD, Abu Dhabi, and the UAE, and is followed by a month-long summer visit allowing students to connect with faculty and develop their research interests.
In January of their first year, students visit AAbu Dhabi again to continue laying the foundation of their research.
Once all the coursework and qualifying exams are completed, students pursue fulltime research under their advisors’ supervision in NYUAD’s brand-new, custom-built facilities.
NYUAD has contributed to my goals and accomplishments by providing the ideal environment for my research. The vast amount of resources available to PhD candidates has no match compared to anywhere else, and University faculty have strong ties to major industry players both in UAE and the US.
- Nektarios Tsoutsos, Global PhD in Engineering
The international experience I have gained studying at NYUAD has opened my eyes to a wealth of opportunities that exist worldwide. In addition to working in a lab with state
of-the-art instrumentation, I have been able to work and visit conferences in other countries, which I consider a rare privilege in graduate school.
