Veronica Segarra, assistant professor of biology at High Point University, NC, has been named Acting Co-Chair of ASCB’s Minorities Affairs Committee (MAC). Segarra steps in for MAC Co-Chair Andrew Campbell who will become the Dean of Brown University’s Graduate School this summer. Dean Campbell will remain a MAC member but the new post requires that he shed other responsibilities. Segarra will serve with current MAC Co-Chair Franklin Carrero-Martínez until the end of this year as MAC continues its search for a permanent co-chair. The closing date for nominations including self-nominations is September 1.
Segarra joined ASCB in 2008 and has served as a regular committee member on MAC since 2014. She moved to the biology department at High Point last fall. She completed her PhD in Biophysics and Biochemistry at Yale and her BS in Biochemistry at the University of Miami. ASCB’s MAC is dedicated to increasing the number of underrepresented minorities (URM) in cell biology through recruiting, mentoring, and providing career development training while opening new scientific opportunities for URM students and faculty.
