Minorities Affairs Committee Travel Awards

Award Overview:

Applicants may apply for a Minorities Travel Award (up to $1,800 towards meeting expenses). Meeting expenses can include lodging, travel, meals, ground transportation, poster presentation expenses, and meeting registration. ASCB MAC Travel Award Recipients are encouraged to attend the MAC Mentoring Symposium and Poster Session on Saturday, December 3, 2011 and to assist MAC members in the MAC/EdComm Information Booth at an agreed upon period during the meeting. The MAC Saturday activities take place on December 3, 2011, 9:00 am - 4:00 pm. All ASCB MAC travel award recipients are encouraged to participate in the MAC Poster Competition, 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm.

Minorities Travel Awards:

Undergraduate students, pre-doctoral (graduate) students, postdoctoral fellows and junior faculty (assistant professor or equivalent) who meet the ethnicity and residence requirements, are presenting an abstract at the ASCB Annual Meeting and who are currently conducting research in topics related to cell biology and related fields including cellular aging and those listed below are eligible to apply for a minorities travel award. Current and past MAC Linkage Fellows and Visiting Professors are also encouraged to apply. Please note that you are only eligible to receive one ASCB travel award. If you would like to apply for a travel award and are not able to submit an abstract and present a poster, please contact Deborah McCall at 301-347-9323 for instructions on how to proceed. Applications may be accepted after the deadline, if funding is still available.

  • Role of telomeres and telomerase in cell aging
  • Age-related changes in intracellular signaling
  • Cellular oxidative stress and protective mechanisms
  • Age-related change in structure and function of extracellular matrix
  • Stem cell biology related to health problems in older peope
  • Cell biology of the aging - immune, musculoskeletal and cardiovascular systems
Steps To Apply:
  1. Submit Abstract:
    To qualify for consideration for a MAC Travel Award, abstracts must be submitted to the Annual Meeting through the regular abstract submission process. Priority will be given to applicants who are first authors. Once you successfully complete your abstract submission, you will be assigned an abstract control number. The number will need to be entered at the end of this award application. The abstract control number can be found on the "Review My Work" page on the abstract submission site.
  2. Complete and Submit This Application:
    Provide your contact information, answer questions about yourself, copy over your CV or a short biography, and enter your abstract control number (see Step 1). Each applicant must complete this application separately. No more than one application per abstract will be considered. Multiple applications per abstract will not be considered.
  3. Send Letter of Recommendation:
    A letter of recommendation from the principal investigator/advisor must be submitted with this travel award application. Address the letter of support to "The MAC Travel Award Review Committee."
Three Ways To Send Your Letter Of Recommendation:
  1. Your advisor may send a letter of support from his/her email address to Minorities Affairs (mac@ascb.org). Your name should appear as a part of the subject line.
  2. The letter may also be written on institution letterhead, signed by your advisor and faxed to the ASCB (301) 347-9310 or scanned and sent as an email attachment to Minorities Affairs.
  3. The letter may be mailed to the following address:

Deadline And Disposition Notification:

The application deadline is September 1, 2011. Applications may be submitted after the deadline, if funds are still available. If you prefer to mail this application, it must be received by the deadline. A completed application includes the application form, a CV or biography, abstract control number, and letter of recommendation.
