Minorities Affairs Committee Travel Awardees

Minority travel to attend ASCB Annual Meetings has been a Society interest since 1980 when then Society President Bill Brinkley and others began holding breakfast and discussion meetings with minority scientists attending the Annual Meeting.

Using discretionary funds, ASCB support continued from 1981-1983 under the presidencies of Marilyn Farquhar, Jim Jamieson, and Morris Karnovsky. During this period Winston Anderson also contributed funds for student participation from his Howard University/Rockefeller (HUROC) grant. After 1993, funding was obtained through an NIH/MARC or an NSF grant administered by the ASCB National Office.

In 1993, thirty travel awards were made to minority graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and junior faculty. From 1994 through 1998 between 25-29 awards were made. Yearly support for 24 awards was provided through the MAC NIH/NIGMS Minority Access to Research Careers grant; additional awards were funded by Chroma Technology and Pfizer, Inc.

In 2004, 40 meeting attendees were supported by the MAC MARC/NIGMS grant; four additional attendees were supported by the NIH, National Institute on Aging. Awardees present their research data at the Minorities Poster Session as well as at their regularly scheduled poster session.

This Minority Poster Session offers ASCB executive officers and council, as well as other meeting attendees who might not otherwise have the opportunity to view the awardee's posters an opportunity to meet these specially honored minority scientists, thus providing enhanced exposure and opportunities for mentoring and collegial collaboration.
