Dylan Matthews of the Washington Post’s “Wonkblog” has a scathing interview with former NIH Director Elias Zerhouni in which he predicts a generational disaster for U.S. basic bioscience research if the looming sequestration cuts come to pass on March 1. It will knock established PIs into the ditch and drive a generation of young investigators out of research, Zerhouni contends. As for the counter argument that private industry could take over basic research, Zerhouni was scathing. “That’s the most ridiculous caveman statement I’ve ever heard.”
