iBioEducation—Helping You Teach and Learn

There are always times when we need some extra help in the classroom—in finding new ways to engage students or to encourage them to learn about a new topic, for example. iBioEducation from iBiology provides tools that can help enrich your students’ learning experience. It doesn’t matter if you are a teaching a graduate class, an undergraduate class, or a high school class; there is something for everyone.

One of the best features in iBioEducation is the section called Exploring Biology, where you can find videos on a wide range of subjects like biochemistry, development, microbiology, and even basic laboratory techniques. Each subject is further divided into topics. For example, within the subject of biochemistry, students can choose to learn about carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, or nucleic acids. Every topic has a set of introductory clips taken from iBioSeminar videos that emphasize the concepts students need to know. Once students have this basic knowledge, they can watch iBioSeminar videos relevant to each topic. These resources can be used as supplements to lectures, freeing up time for classroom discussion.

In an undergraduate class last spring, Jonathan Scholey teamed with iBiology to offer the Cell Biology Flipped Classroom Course at University of California, Davis. In this course, available in Taking Courses, students watched iBioSeminars as homework and were given assignments to guide them through the videos. Once a week, the students met with Scholey to discuss a scientific question related to a talk. The course was a huge success, and the materials are available online.

Also in the Taking Courses section, you can take a Microscopy course. Yes, you read correctly. You can learn the basics and the advanced techniques of light microscopy and imaging. The Microscopy course also provides tips to get the best results from your experiments. You even get to see the insides of a Nikon microscope with an explanation of how it works. If you are relatively new to the topic or just want a quick overview, a short course is also available.

iBioEducation aims to improve the way science is taught, by providing not only lectures but also pedagogical tools. The Scientific Teaching Series provides these tools and will help you improve the learning experience in the classroom.

I have only scratched the surface in this post. iBioEducation provides many very interesting tools for educators, which have been used to great success in universities and schools around the country. If you want to encourage your students to Make Discoveries or just want to Get Inspired, you should give it a try! There is something for every stage of education. I am sure you won’t be disappointed. And if you are a happy customer, let the iBiology team know!
