Travel Information
ACCESS TO ICC KYOTO
Most visitors to ICC Kyoto find Kansai International Airport (KIX) to be the most convenient airport when arriving from overseas. Meeting participants should take a JR Airport Express Train “Haruka” or an Airport Limousine Bus to JR Kyoto Station and then take a Karasuma subway line to Kyoto International Conference Center.
There is also a useful door-to-door shared shuttle service operating from Kansai International Airport to visitor's accommodation. Although this service may take longer than public transportation, it does have the advantage of dropping you off at your destination. Reservations must be made at least 48 hours in advance and can be made online.
*Most public transportation accepts payments only in cash. We advise you to bring Japanese yen in cash when visiting Japan.

GROUND TRANSPORTATION
Kyoto is easily reachable from a number of major cities in Japan. Ways to get there include the Shinkansen bullet train and standard trains. Local trains, subway, buses, taxis and bicycles are all common methods of transportation when travelling within Kyoto.
Shinkansen, Bullet Train
Shinkansen bullet train is the fastest method of overland transportation in Japan. Shinkansen trains are grouped by speed. The fastest is the Nozomi, which runs from Tokyo to Kyoto in 2 hours and 15 min. Hikari, which makes a few more stops, takes 3 hours. Kodama, which stops at every station, takes 4 hours. Trains on this line depart several times per hour. They are very punctual.
Japan rail pass
The Japan Rail Pass is the most economical way to travel throughout Japan by rail. Being a holder of a Japan Rail Pass, makes it particularly convenient and affordable to ride the Shinkansen. However, please be aware that some restrictions apply such as that the pass is not valid for Nozomi trains (the fastest bullet train). Please visit the website for details.
Train
If you plan to visit neighboring cities such as Osaka, Kobe or Nara, local trains may be a useful system to use. Keihan, Kintetsu, and Hankyu are the major private lines. Private line fares are inevitably cheaper than JR (Japan Rail). Tickets can be purchased from the vending machines at each station. Instructions for the machines are available in English.
Subway
Subway is a useful method of transportation in Kyoto. Two subway lines bisect Kyoto: the Karasuma line running north to south (where ICC Kyoto is located) and Tozai line running east to west. Like the local trains, most of the signs are in English and tickets can be bought from bilingual machines located beside the ticket gates at each station.
Public Transportation in Kyoto
City Buses
Most of Kyoto's innumerable temples, shrines and other cultural treasures are located away from the subway and are better accessed by the network of City Buses. Announcements are made in English and electronic sign displaying the name of stops in the Roman alphabet make it easy to know when you have reached your stop. Enter the rear door of the bus and take a ticket indicating at which station you got on. Pay at the front of the bus as you exit. If you are using an all-day pass or other card, place it in the machine reader near the door as you enter and exit the bus. Please visit the website for a more detailed explanation of how to use the buses.
Taxis
Taxis are another option for traveling within Kyoto. Kyoto is the city with the largest number of taxis in Japan, and are consequently easily found on all major roads. Fares start from under 600 yen for the first couple of kilometers. Japanese taxis are safe, clean and comfortable to ride. Remember NOT to touch the doors as they are fully automated.
Bicycles
Bicycling is a fun way of getting around the city, particularly in the fall when the meeting is held. The simple layout of the city and its scale makes it practical for cyclists. There are a number of bike rental shops in Kyoto and most of them require passports to rent a bike.
