Undergraduate Student Travel Awards

Award Overview:

Undergraduate Student Travel Awards are available to undergraduate students to cover expenses to attend the annual meeting. To qualify for a travel award, an applicant must be an ASCB member or have recently submitted an application for ASCB membership. The maximum award is US$300. The proximity of the applicant’s institution to San Diego will be taken into consideration when setting the award amount. The ASCB Education Committee will select the award winners on the basis of financial need, scientific merit, and educational and professional interests.

Steps to Apply:

  • Submit Abstract– To qualify for consideration for an Undergraduate Student Travel Award, abstracts must be submitted to the meeting through the regular abstract submission process. Applicants must be the first author on a submitted abstract.
  • Complete and Submit the Application– Provide your contact information and answer questions about yourself. Each applicant must complete this application separately.
  • Send Letter of Recommendation– A letter of recommendation from the principal investigator/advisor must be submitted with this travel award application. Address the letter of support to “Undergraduate Student Travel Award Review Committee.” The letter should address the undergraduate’s need for financial assistance to attend the meeting, how the meeting attendance will benefit the undergraduate, and the scientific merit of the undergraduate’s work.

How to Send Your Letter of Recommendation:

Your advisor will be sent a URL through which he/she can directly upload a letter of recommendation. In your confirmation email you will receive a link that will enable you to change anything on your application or upload a new advisor letter if necessary until September 1, 2015.

Deadline and Disposition Notification:

Graduate Student Travel Awards are available to graduate students at any stage of study and from any country to cover expenses to attend the annual meeting. To qualify for a travel award, an applicant must be an ASCB member or have recently submitted an application for ASCB membership. The maximum award is US$300 for students in the United States and US$400 for students in other countries. The proximity of the applicant’s institution from San Diego will be considered when setting the award amount. The ASCB Education Committee will select the award winners on the basis of financial need, stage of the applicant’s career, and scientific merit. Individuals who have received a previous ASCB Graduate Student Travel Award are not eligible to apply.

Postdoctoral Travel Awards are available to postdocs at any stage of training and from any country to cover expenses to attend the annual meeting. To qualify for a travel award, an applicant must be an ASCB member or have recently submitted an application for ASCB membership. The maximum award is US$300. The proximity of the applicant’s institution to San Diego will be taken into consideration when setting the award amount. The ASCB Education Committee will select the award winners on the basis of financial need, scientific merit, and stage of professional development. Individuals who have previously received an ASCB Graduate Student Travel Award or a Minorities Affairs Committee Travel Award are eligible to apply for a Postdoctoral Travel Award. However, you cannot receive more than one type of ASCB award in any given year and you cannot apply for a postdoc travel award if you have received one in the past.

Faculty at Teaching Institution Travel Awards are available to e faculty members, with preference to those who are beginning their careers, are bringing students to the meeting, and/or those who demonstrate financial need. U.S. residency is not required. The award may be used to cover any expenses to attend the Annual Meeting. To qualify for a travel award, an applicant must be an ASCB member or have recently submitted an application for ASCB membership. The maximum award is US $500. The proximity of the applicant’s institution to San Diego will be taken into consideration when setting the award amount. The ASCB Education Committee will select the award winners on the basis of financial need, stage of professional development, and scientific merit.

  • Submit Abstract- To qualify for consideration for a Faculty at Teaching Institution Travel Award, abstracts must be submitted to the meeting through the regular abstract submission process.

  • Submit an Abbreviated CV and One- to Two-Page Statement– Please upload your abbreviated CV and a one- to two-page statement 1) explaining your objectives in attending the meeting, and 2) describing how attendance at the meeting will have an impact on your teaching.

WICB Childcare Grants

Grant Overview

The ASCB Women in Cell Biology (WICB) Committee, with funding from Nature Publishing Group, is accepting applications for grant support to help offset the cost of childcare, enabling scientists with dependent children to attend the ASCB Annual Meeting. To qualify for a WICB childcare grant, an applicant must be an ASCB member or have recently submitted an application for ASCB membership. Applicants are required to present a talk and/or poster at the meeting and will be notified of the disposition of their application by September 24. Grants will be in the form of reimbursement of qualified expenses up to the designated limit to be remitted at the ASCB Annual Meeting. Only one parent of a child or children may apply. You may apply for both a childcare grant and a travel award. Priority will be given to students and early-career scientists.

Funds may be applied to the following needs:

  1. Home-based childcare expenses incurred because of meeting attendance (funds may not be applied to normal ongoing expenses).
  2. Travel of a relative or other care provider to your home to care for your child(ren) while attending the ASCB Annual Meeting.
  3. Travel of your child(ren) to the location of a care provider who does not live in your community.
  4. Travel of a care provider to the ASCB Annual Meeting with you to care for your child(ren) in that city.
  5. Childcare to be retained onsite at the ASCB Annual Meeting.

International Travel Awards

The maximum award is US$500. To qualify for a travel award, an applicant must be an ASCB member or have recently submitted an application for ASCB membership. The ASCB International Affairs Committee (IAC) will select the award winners on the basis of financial need, scientific merit, and stage of professional development.

Limousine Transportation from the Airport to the Conference

The International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) is offering travel awards to junior scientists (students, postdocs, or early career scientists) who are nationals of an ICGEB member country (click here to view a list of member countries). To qualify for a travel award, an applicant must be an ASCB member or have recently submitted an application for ASCB membership. The ASCB International Affairs Committee will select the award winners and provide awards ranging from $500-700 on the basis of financial need, scientific merit, and the potential benefit for future career development.

URM travel awards are supported by the Burroughs Wellcome Fund and a grant from Howard Hughes Medical Institute to the MAC supporting the Visiting Professors Program. URMs should apply for the ASCB travel awards appropriate to them (undergraduate, graduate student, postdoc, or faculty at teaching institutions; see left menu) and indicate on the application form that they are URMs. To qualify for a travel award, you must be an ASCB member or have recently submitted an application for ASCB membership and you must be the first author on a submitted abstract.
